INTRODUCTION - Faulkner's (Falkner) Island Faulkner's Island as the locals call it, or Falkner Island as shown on the maritime charts, is a small island 3.5 miles off the coast of Guilford, CT. The island is a wildlife refuge managed by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge, Falkner Island Unit. The Island is closed to the public as it is home to thousands of Common Terns and the endangered Roseate Tern during the summer. In the fall, after the birds have migrated, the Island is opened for one day to the public. The lighthouse is operational and is maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard. When the lighthouse was in danger of falling into the ocean by the continual erosion of shoreline, The Faulkner's Light Brigade (FLB) was formed, and over several years raised public awareness of the problem, sought solutions to control the erosion, and worked with the town of Guilford and Connecticut State legislatures to raise funding to save the lighthouse. And save it they did! The FLB continues today, working with state agencies, to maintain and improve the Island and lighthouse. The DVD is available in Guilford, CT at the Chamber of Commerce, the Visitors Center and directly from the Faulkner's Light Brigade at (203) 453-8400. And of course ... from this web site. BACKGROUND - Vidiographer's notes As a documentarian, much of what we video is based on circumstance, opportunity and preparedness. This project began in a conversation with Andrew French, director of the Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge, CT, with a request to video what most people do not have the opportunity to observe ... the Roseate and Common Tern nesting colonies on Falkner (Faulkner’s) Island. Soon I received an invitation to accompany Sara Williams (Wildlife Biologist) on one of her trips to the Island. The bird colonies are substantial and "welcomed" our intrusion into their domain by diving at us and pecking at our heads. For protection we wore wide-brimmed hats and I covered my camera with a towel. Our original video plan was for a short bonus feature in a larger DVD video project about the town of Guilford. The subject material was fascinating, and after reviewing it with Joel Helander (Guilford Historian) and Fred Farnsworth (Chairman, Faulkner's Light Brigade), it was expanded to include some history about the Island and the role that Faulkner's Island Light Brigade played in saving the Island and the lighthouse itself. Thus this DVD video project was born. |
