INTRODUCTION - Insieme in Italia "Together in Italy" The literal translation of Insieme in Italia is, as you may have guessed, "Together in Italy". This video is a compilation of two trips to Italy exploring some of the towns in the central region of Italy and then a bunch of towns along the Amalfi Coast. In addition to some great medieval locations and the island of Capri, we had the opportunity to visit a private museum of Prince Luigi of Angerio of Sant'Agata in Ravello. This is not your usual "travelogue" with tons of narration. It is, however, an entertaining set of video vignettes that tell their story in images and music. Sub tittles are added where appropriate. Total length of the video is 70 minutes.

BACKGROUND - Author's notes On this trip to Italy we chose to focus on the Amalfi Coast which we heard was just fantastic ... and it is. But before we reached the coast we spent time with friends in our ancestral town of Corfinio (central Italy). And, especially at the Excelsior Hotel with the Achille family with whom we have grown quite close. It was Collela who brought us to the antique winery in Vittoria where we saw first hand what a cantina, or wine shop, was like in the 18 th century. In fact, the original feet-stomping grape vat was still in place. I always thought that was a joke or myth ... but it is true. When you first enter the "Cantina Antica", on your left you will see a low cement wall enclosing the grape stomping area. Nearby to Corfino is the major town of Sulmona where they make fantastic flowers and other objects out of their candy-coated almonds. I never liked the "Jordan Almonds" I got at weddings ... too hard and stale. But these, fresh from the factory were fantastic. Legend has it that candy-coated almonds originated in Sulmona and pre-dates Roman occupation of Italy. On our way to Caserta, where we have family (by marriage), we stopped back at Isernia, another ancient mountain top town, to drop of a copy off "La Grande Avventura" at the Tarverna Maresca. We had stopped here on our previous trip to Italy. Isernia is noted for its fine lace making and the location of the oldest known prehistoric site dating back to 730,000 BC. Not only did we visit the museum, but we also purchased some lace and we filmed the "mama" making lace. We promised we would give them a copy of the finished DVD. Traveling from Corfino to the Amalfi Coast we had to stop and visit family in Caserta. And of course, when in Caserta one must visit "La Reggia" or Royal Palace. It has 1,200 rooms, of which we saw a few, and it has a fantastic garden with cascading water pools. It was also a film location for Episode 5 of Star Wars. For an Italian flavor, please visit La Reggia. Arriving on the Amalfi Coast we stayed at the Villa Scarpariello, named for the shape of the land that resembles a boot. ("Scarpa" meaning boot or shoe. The "ello" is a suffix denoting smallness or endearment). Our room next to the ocean was delightful and you will get a complete tour of the facilities and meet the staff in our video. Well, that's all there is to say on that for the time being. |
